Measurement Connection to The One and Only Ivan

Today for math, we worked in tables to research the measurements of some of the characters in The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate.  Here is what we learned:

  • HY: We need to work on teams and have a bit less leadership.
  • NB: Elephants can be 10 feet tall.
  • LW: Gorillas are 6 feet tall when they are standing.
  • EB: Bananas are 10 inches.
  • NY: Parrots are 25 cm tall.
  • AM: We learned that a seal can be around 6 feet tall.
  • JA: We all came up with different answers in our group because we researched different sites and different species.
  • NB: We think Julia is 5 feet 2 in., as we looked up, "How tall are 10 year-olds."
Tomorrow we are going to put the heights in order and create a large graph out in our hallway!

Celebrating The One and Only Ivan

We received an email about a week ago from Mrs. Ripp, the founder and leader of the Global Read Aloud, and she shared exciting news...Mrs. Applegate, the author of The One and Only Ivan, would pick three classes to have a video conference with!  We thought about ways we could convince Mrs. Applegate that we would be a perfect class for the video conferencing.  Of course, we love the book, but we knew that we would have to showcase some of our creativity, as well.  Here are some of the projects we would like Mrs. Applegate to view in our quest to be one of the classes she picks!

Dear Mrs. Applegate,
Here are some of the things we have worked on to celebrate Ivan and your wonderful book!  We hope that you will pick us to have a Google Hang Out with, as we would love to share this honor with other classes too!  We hope you enjoy the projects we have created!

Sincerely,
Team Bond Third Graders

We hope you enjoy these videos!  We can't wait to add more, as we continue to read The One and Only Ivan!

The Creative Cardboard Carnival

On Friday, October 5, 2012, we worked all day to create the Creative Cardboard Carnival.  Here are some highlights that our class wrote about this morning.

  • Our game was called, Toss the Ball Mario, and we drew Mario on our game. (AC)
  • I made 2 games. (JA)
  • I used foam, glue, a water bottle, tape, cardboard, and bubble wrap to create Ball Toss. (EB)
  • We made small planes out of a straw, index card, and tape for our game. (DX)
  • I made a game called Fast Shot, and we are detailing it right now. (HY)
  • I think my game will be hard to play. (NB)
  • I used a chocolate box and a shoe box to make a basketball game. (LS)
  • I made a tissue box into a telescope. (CK)
  • My cardboard turned into a creation. (MK)
  • You can play anything you want with my creation. (AU)
  • My game is hard to play because you have to fit a ball into the box. (JL)
  • I took tape and lined up Popsicle sticks on it to make a wall for my game. (MB)
  • My favorite part was making our robot clown. (RH)
  • Our game is very, very challenging. (JC)
Below are 2 videos from the Global Cardboard Challenge Day.  The first is a quick movie trailer, and the second one is a longer video.  Enjoy!
